Get ready for a musical journey back in time, as Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty prepares to grace the stage once more, bringing a unique twist to his iconic songs. This isn't just a reunion; it's a long-awaited return to the roots of his musical journey.
A Homecoming Story
Doherty, now residing in Normandy, describes the upcoming Coventry gig as a true homecoming. It's a return to the place where his heart and his business interests have always been intertwined. Growing up and attending school in nearby Bedworth, Warwickshire, Doherty's connection to the area runs deep. His long-time friend and manager, Jai Stanley, also calls Bedworth home, and together, they founded an independent record label, Strap Originals, right there in the heart of the town.
A New Chapter for Babyshambles
After more than a decade away from the spotlight, Babyshambles is back, and this time, they're approaching their music with a fresh perspective. Doherty reflects on the band's 20th anniversary of their album Down in Albion, sharing his excitement about revisiting these songs with a clearer mind and a different energy.
But here's where it gets controversial... Doherty's past struggles with drug addiction and the subsequent breakups and arrests that followed have been well-documented. However, he believes that approaching these songs with a calmer headspace and leaving the chaos behind will create a more sustainable and enjoyable experience for the band and their fans.
"It's time to celebrate the songs without all the carnage," he says.
And this is the part most people miss... Doherty acknowledges that some may have enjoyed the chaos, but he argues that it's not necessary and certainly not sustainable. He's ready to embrace a new chapter, one where he can perform these "strong, beautiful songs" with the ace melodies and lyrics they deserve, without the high-octane desperation of his past.
So, what do you think? Is this a fresh start for Babyshambles, or are they better left in the past? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
