Bill Skarsgård's Hesitation to Play Pennywise Again in HBO's It: Welcome to Derry (2025)

The Return of Pennywise: A Hesitant Journey Back to Derry

Get ready for a chilling adventure as Bill Skarsgård revisits his iconic role in HBO's upcoming series, "It: Welcome to Derry." This prequel promises to unravel the origins of the infamous Pennywise the Clown, but there's a twist - Skarsgård, the master of horror, initially had his doubts about reprising this terrifying character.

But here's where it gets controversial... Skarsgård, who terrified audiences worldwide with his portrayal of Pennywise in 2017, was hesitant to return to Derry. Why? Well, it's not just about the dark nature of the role; it's about the impact it had on him as an actor.

"He was a little hesitant at the beginning," Andy Muschietti, co-creator and executive producer, revealed in an interview. "Playing It is something he did in the past, and at that point, he had played several dark characters. It takes a toll on an actor to live in the headspace of these intense roles for an extended period."

However, Muschietti hinted at a turning point: "Something changed... We discussed the virtues of this new story, and he decided to take on the challenge again."

And this is the part most people miss... Skarsgård's hesitation is understandable. Since "It," he's taken on numerous villainous roles, including the monstrous Count Orlok in "Nosferatu." It's a testament to his talent that he's sought after for these roles, but it's also a reason for him to question returning to the world of Pennywise.

Barbara Muschietti, co-creator and executive producer, shed light on their initial plans: "We had discussed exploring Bob Gray, the man behind Pennywise, in a third movie before It took over his identity."

So, what can we expect from "Welcome to Derry"? While we know little about It, an interdimensional being billions of years old, the series will delve into the story of Bob Gray, the man It possessed. We got a glimpse of Bob Gray in "It: Chapter Two," but his backstory remains largely unexplored.

Skarsgård himself has spoken about the impact Pennywise had on his life and career. He put his heart and soul into the role, and it's understandable that he wouldn't want to repeat the experience. But, as they say, "It" wouldn't be the same without him. So, it's a relief to know that he was convinced to return and bring his unique talent to this highly anticipated series.

What do you think? Is it exciting to see Skarsgård back as Pennywise, or do you think it's time for a fresh take on the character? Let us know in the comments!
