Diabetes in the Philippines: Rising Cases Among Youth | Early Screening & Prevention (2025)

A growing health crisis among young Filipinos demands our attention. The rise in type 2 diabetes cases among the youth is a worrying trend, but there's hope if we take action now.

An advocacy group, Diabetes Philippines, has stepped forward with a powerful message: early screening and healthier habits in schools can curb this epidemic.

"Type 2 diabetes is on the rise among young people due to obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle," says Nines P. Bautista, Vice President of Diabetes Philippines.

But here's where it gets controversial... Bautista believes schools play a crucial role. "Incorporating lifestyle and exercise into the curriculum is key," he asserts.

The Philippine College of Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism defines type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as a "chronic, metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia," or elevated blood sugar levels.

Many patients with T2DM are unaware of their condition until a routine lab test, highlighting the need for early detection.

According to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF), the global diabetes population is expected to reach a staggering 589 million by 2024. In the Philippines, 4,726,300 individuals aged 20 to 79 are living with diabetes, and a concerning 2.8 million remain undiagnosed.

"This pandemic is particularly alarming because most people are unaware they have diabetes," says Fatima I. Tiu, President of Diabetes Philippines.

She adds, "Many only discover their condition after a serious complication, like a heart attack, stroke, or blurred vision."

The disease is caused by various factors, including urbanization, a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy habits, limited access to preventive care, and widening health inequities, according to Ms. Tiu.

As this silent crisis continues, early screening is a powerful tool to intervene early, prevent complications, and reduce the burden on families and the healthcare system.

Apart from early screening, Diabetes Philippines advocates for a healthier school environment with daily exercise and proper meals.

"In my time, we exercised every morning before class, but that's not the case now. There are so many classes," Bautista reminisces.

"We visit schools to educate students, teachers, and canteen owners about serving the right food to kids," he explains.

Data from the IDF projects that diabetes cases in the Western-Pacific region will reach 254 million by 2050.

This is a call to action. Will we let this crisis continue, or will we take steps to create a healthier future for our youth? The choice is ours.
