Elon Musk's latest venture is sparking headlines, and it's not just about rockets or electric cars. This time, it's about an AI companion named Ani, and the details are raising eyebrows.
Published on November 8, 2025, a report from the Hindustan Times sheds light on Elon Musk's personal involvement in the development of xAI's chatbot, Ani. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) further revealed that Musk has been deeply involved in designing this 'racy' AI, which is essentially an AI girlfriend.
So, what exactly is Ani?
Grok, xAI's AI chatbot, describes Ani as an "AI companion feature." It's envisioned as a 3D animated, anime-inspired character, bearing a resemblance to Misa Amane from Death Note. Ani is designed with an affection system, offering voice and visual customization, and accessibility features. But here's where it gets controversial: Ani also includes an NSFW (Not Safe For Work) mode. This has ignited concerns regarding the potential exposure of young users to inappropriate content.
The Pursuit of Popularity
Musk reportedly aims for xAI’s Grok to become the world’s most popular AI, and Ani was created to help boost user numbers. On Grok’s iOS app, Ani's description reads, “I’m your little sweet delight.”
The Employee Factor
To train Ani, xAI reportedly utilized employee data. According to a company lawyer, Lily Lim, biometric data from employees was used to teach the chatbot "how to act and appear like human beings during conversations." Employees functioned as AI tutors and were required to sign a license allowing xAI to use their faces and voices. This was part of a confidential project called “Project Skippy.”
But there were concerns...
Some employees expressed worries about their data potentially being used in deepfakes if xAI sold the data, and others voiced concerns about the opt-out option. The project leader's response was, "If you have any concerns with regards to the project, you’re welcome to reach out to any of the [points of contact] listed on the second slide.”
The Aftermath
Following these concerns, employees received a notice titled “AI Tutor’s Role in Advancing xAI’s Mission.” It detailed that “AI Tutors will actively participate in gathering or providing data, such as…recording audio or participating in video sessions.” Ani, the avatar Musk promoted, was launched in mid-July.
What do you think about the ethics of using employee data to create an AI companion with an NSFW mode? Is it a step forward or a step too far? Share your thoughts in the comments!
