Supercars Sandown 500: Mostert Gains Advantage as Brown & Randle Struggle | Race Preview (2025)

A Dramatic Turn of Events: The Supercars Finals Battle Intensifies

The Supercars championship is heating up, and some big names are feeling the pressure!

Chaz Mostert's path to the finals has been illuminated, as he secured a prime starting position for the opening race at the Sandown 500. With his teammate Ryan Wood by his side, starting from pole position, Mostert has a real shot at making it to the inaugural grand final in Adelaide.

But here's where it gets controversial... Kai Allen, the next fastest contender, is two rows behind, which means Mostert has a golden opportunity to secure his spot. Wood, who had a disappointing last round at Gold Coast, is determined to assist his teammate and make a strong comeback.

"First and foremost, it's all about helping Chazzy," Wood emphasized. "A good start is crucial. We'll play it by ear, but leading from the front would certainly make our job easier."

Most of the finals contenders are strategically positioned within the top 10, with five of them starting from there. However, the real drama unfolded during qualifying, where some strategic missteps cost certain drivers their grand final hopes.

And this is the part most people miss... Will Brown, the reigning champion, and Thomas Randle from Tickford Racing, saw their dreams go up in smoke due to some unexpected twists.

Brown, confident with his early pace, pulled into the pit lane after setting a time of 1:09.132 seconds, only to be leapfrogged by the rest of the field, ending up in 15th position. Randle, on the other hand, opted for a bold one-lap strategy in the first segment of qualifying, but it backfired, leaving him in 22nd place and with a mountain to climb.

"I could have done better," Randle admitted. "Looking back, maybe I needed that extra run at the start. But there's no point dwelling on it. We're starting from a very disadvantageous position, and I feel like I've let the team down."

With only four drivers progressing to the grand-final round in Adelaide, the competition is fierce. A win in either of this weekend's races guarantees a spot, so every lap counts.

Team 18's Anton De Pasquale and former Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki are well-positioned, starting in third and fourth, respectively. Brad Jones Racing's Bryce Fullwood and Team 18 veteran David Reynolds complete the top 10.

Jayden Ojeda, the new PremiAir signing, will make his full-time Supercars debut from 21st position.

The first 250km race of the weekend starts at 3:20 pm, and the tension is palpable. Who will seize the opportunity and who will falter under pressure? Only time will tell.
