Zelensky's Historic Ireland Visit: Addresses Oireachtas Amid Ukraine War Talks (2025)

A bold move for peace: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife, Olena Zelenska, have touched down in Ireland for a crucial official visit. Their arrival, just before 11 pm last night, marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring an end to the devastating conflict in Ukraine.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister of State Thomas Byrne were there to greet the Ukrainian president and his wife on the runway, a warm welcome in a time of great uncertainty.

"Our support for Ukraine is unwavering," Martin emphasized on social media, a powerful statement of solidarity.

But here's where it gets controversial: with US-led ceasefire negotiations ongoing, Zelensky's visit comes at a critical juncture in the Ukrainian peace plan.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian leader met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, part of a larger discussion involving European leaders to end the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

And this is the part most people miss: the real work begins now. Taoiseach Martin and Zelensky are likely to strategize ways to strengthen Ukraine's position at the negotiating table. To that end, Ireland has pledged an additional €100 million in non-lethal military support and €25 million for Ukraine's urgent energy needs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee will also push for Ireland's participation in an International Claims Commission for Ukraine, a body that will assess the damage caused by Russia and determine appropriate reparations.

But it's not all about politics: Zelensky and his wife will also attend the launch of the Ireland-Ukraine Economic Forum, an initiative to boost economic ties between the two countries.

And there's more: the first lady, Olena Zelenska, will meet with Minister for Higher Education James Lawless to explore ways to make it easier for Ukrainian students to pursue their studies in Ireland.

Security is tight, with checks in place at Government Buildings and Leinster House, and the latter closed to all but essential personnel. Gardaí have warned of potential traffic disruptions due to the high-profile visit.

You can catch all the coverage of President Zelensky's visit on the RTÉ News channel and online. His address to the Oireachtas will be broadcast on RTÉ One television from just before 3 pm, and an extended Drivetime programme on RTÉ Radio One will begin at 3.45 pm.

A historic visit, a crucial moment in the pursuit of peace. What are your thoughts on Ireland's role in supporting Ukraine? Do you think these efforts will make a difference? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
